Create your first VM

Create the administrator#

Run this once. The password file is yours; delete it afterwards.

Once
sudo -u svavyom-api /usr/libexec/svavyom/api bootstrap-admin \
  --db /var/lib/svavyom/api/svavyom.db --username admin < PASSWORD_FILE

Import a base image#

Use an Ubuntu or Debian cloud image in qcow2 format that you downloaded and checked yourself. Svavyom never downloads or uploads images.

As root
sudo /usr/libexec/svavyom/api register-image --provision-config /etc/svavyom/provision.json \
  --id ubuntu-24.04 --display-name "Ubuntu 24.04" --distribution Ubuntu --version 24.04 \
  --source /abs/path/noble-server-cloudimg-amd64.img --login-user ubuntu --min-disk-gib 3 --cloud-init

An image is offered for new VMs when you mark it qualified after a real boot and login test.

Check the installation#

Both should report PASS
svavyom-ctl validate-config
svavyom-ctl status

Create the VM#

  1. Choose Create, then a name, image, vCPUs, memory, root-disk size and a network.
  2. Paste one public SSH key. It is the only way to log in; password login is off. Compare the fingerprint on the review screen with ssh-keygen -lf your-key.pub.
  3. Submit. The VM ends up Stopped. Press Start.
  4. When it has an address: ssh -i your-key ubuntu@ADDRESS.
